The Australian Dental Association (ADA) recommends that children have their first dental check-up by their first birthday or when their first tooth appears (whichever comes first). Early visits help ensure that your child’s teeth and gums are developing properly and get them comfortable with the dental environment.
Tiny Teeth, Big Smiles
Starting dental visits early helps prevent cavities, detect any potential concerns and establish good oral hygiene habits from the beginning. Your child's first appointment will be gentle and stress-free. We focus on familiarising them with the dentist’s chair, checking for any early signs of tooth decay and providing helpful tips for parents on brushing, teething and diet choices.

There are many cases in which the remaining natural teeth don't have to be pulled. In fact, you would only pull all the teeth if you're getting a fixed bridge or denture.
A single dental implant means one artificial tooth root surgically placed in the jawbone. After integration into the bone, the root is topped with a crown and abutment.
For implant bridges or dentures, your Mount Waverley implant dentist may use up to six implants to secure one full arch of replacement teeth.
Remember, your dentist uses powerful local anesthesia. So, even if you need a tooth extraction before implants, you won’t feel pain.
Are You a Candidate for Dental Implants?
Your dentist will evaluate your tooth loss to determine implant candidacy. You may be an immediate candidate or require pretreatments, such as bone grafting or a sinus lift, to help make implants a reality.
If dental implants are not suitable, your dentist will explain why and discuss alternative tooth replacement options with you.
At your initial assessment, you’ll also learn more about costs, which vary by case complexity, necessary pretreatments and the number of implants.

Yes, a toothache can absolutely count as a dental emergency, especially if the pain is severe, persistent, or accompanied by swelling, fever, or heightened sensitivity to pressure or temperature. These symptoms may signal infection, nerve exposure or trauma that requires immediate attention.
Toothaches can range from mild discomfort to intense, throbbing pain, but when exactly does one become an emergency? At Mount Waverley Smiles, Dr Austin Rhee helps patients understand when to seek emergency care and how to protect their oral health quickly and safely.
Is a Toothache a Dental Emergency?
If your toothache worsens over time, affects your ability to eat, sleep, or concentrate or is accompanied by facial swelling or pus, it’s important to see an emergency dentist as soon as possible. Severe dental pain in the aftermath of an injury or a cracked tooth likely also calls for emergency treatment.
Can I Go to the Hospital with a Dental Emergency?
While hospital emergency rooms can help with pain relief or antibiotics, they are not equipped to treat the underlying dental issue. You should only turn to the ER for dental problems when they are clear emergencies, such as uncontrolled bleeding, difficulty breathing, or signs of widespread infection. Otherwise, inform your dentist of any issues you’re experiencing so that they can arrange you for timely emergency care.

Many patients ask us, 'How long do dental crowns last?' A dental crown has the potential to serve you for around five to fifteen years. With proper home care and routine dental check-ups, the estimate may be exceeded for some people.
Here are some tips on how to promote the longevity of your dental crown.
Caring for Your Dental Crown
You can improve your tooth crown's lifespan by taking a few simple steps at home:
- Consistent brushing and flossing
- Avoiding sticky or chewy foods that could pull your crown off
- Don't chew on ice
- Never open or carry things with your teeth
Visiting your dentist every six months for routine check-ups and cleans also helps protect the health of your crown. Your dentist will take x-rays once each year to check the internal health of your crown. These images allow us to spot potential problems before they become more significant concerns.
