Root planing and scaling sounds intimidating, but all it means is gently removing plaque and bacteria from below the gumline. At Mount Waverley Smiles, we recommend this treatment when patients have periodontal disease.
Root planing and scaling removes debris so your gum tissue can heal and reattach to the tooth. When tartar builds up beneath the gumline, periodontal pocketing can occur, which creates a loose pocket that is a harbour for bacteria and the cycle of infection.
Signs of Gingivitis and Periodontal Disease
The early signs of gum disease (gingivitis) can include the following:
- Tenderness and swelling in the gums
- Bleeding when you brush and floss
- Bad breath
If we catch it early enough, gingivitis is reversible. Treatment includes a thorough dental clean and polish, improved home care and potentially an anti-bacterial rinse at home.
Left untreated, it can progress into periodontitis, also known as advanced gum disease. There is no cure for periodontitis, but it can be managed.
Gum Disease Treatment
This is where root planing and scaling comes in. Before your gums can heal, we need to remove tartar and smooth the tooth, creating the environment for gums to heal, shrink back down, and tighten around the tooth where they belong!
After your root planing and scaling appointment, we will instruct you on supporting your oral health at home and recommend any products to help you stay healthy. Your dentist may also recommend more frequent dental cleans.
Has It Been a While Since Your Last Dental Check-Up?
We will never judge or shame you. Plenty of things can keep you from getting the dental care you need to stay healthy. We are here when you are ready to take control of your oral health and feel confident about smiling again.
Once you regain your oral health, we will recommend a treatment schedule to help you avoid a gum disease relapse, which is common once you have had periodontitis.
